Born 1968 in Kobe, Japan, Motohiko Ichino took up the guitar at the age of fourteen. As a teenager, he was inspired by rock and blues musicians. He met jazz when he was in university and began to dig in the art of improvisation.
After several years of playing in Osaka area, He enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with influencial musicians/teachers such as Mick Goodrick,Bret Willmott and Jon Damian. In Boston, He had opportunities to play with many of great musicians like Terri Lyne Carrington. He graduated from Berklee in 1999 and continued to study improvisation with Charlie Banacos.
After he went back to Japan in 2001, he settled in Tokyo city and started active career as performer, composer and teacher. In 2003, he won the first prize in the annual GIBSON JAPAN JAZZ GUITAR CONTEST.
He released CD "Sketches"(Ammonite Musique) in 2007,which contains 10 compositions of his own. Besides playing his music as a leader ,he is busy as a sideman for many bands. He is playing on saxophonist Ryo Hashizume''s CD "Wordless"(Polystar) and saxophonist Taiichi Kamimura''s upcoming CD "Out of Throat"(East Works Entertainment / with Taiichi,Ben Monder,Drew Gress and Take Toriyama).
