Behold - The Record

Blistering blues-based guitar riffs that shimmer into cool jazz, heat up with country and salsa, and melt into a post-modern resonance, the album Behold unapologetically floats beyond a world of simple styles and descriptors. Loaded with Beatles-esque harmonies, hypnotic bass lines, and existential lyrics, the record harkens back to a psychedelic age of a cohesive concept album heard through stereo headphones. The band draw on their many influences and display their proficiency on tracks that sound like the Great American Song Book. Movie score landscapes (Granada) and anthemic country rock songs (Promise Me) reflect the audio stylings of their hometown of Los Angeles, while punk rock and alternative influences erupt through their music school tendencies (Ecce Homo, Inferno), Hard rocking american and british blues (Absinthe, Song A) give way to cool jazz and modal styles (Eve, Del Mar) to create one of the most unique albums to be recently released. Behold sets a musical standard that is unparalleled by any other modern group, while maintaining a sexy and unique voice that shows no equal.

Behold - The Band
Out of the spirit of music, art, and intoxication Behold began their musical explorations under the name Ecce in late 2004 (ecce is the latin imperative of behold). Founded by philosophy grad and music aficionado James Jeffery Caldwell, Jefe, the group was booked to play performances before they had officially existed. Jefe had recorded a demo of songs with drummer Adam Zuckert (F-minus, Red 5, Matt Costa) written over previous years during wandering thoughts in college classes. The demo generated interest from booking promoters and agents and soon landed gigs, sans an actual band. In a hurry to find competent musicians, an ad placed on Craig’s List found guitarist Chris Peterson, a studio musician recently moved from Boston where he had graduated from Berklee University. Peterson’s virtuoso handling of guitar through uniquely american music styles meshed brilliantly with the more punk and alternative rhythm guitar influences of Caldwell. Friend and fellow alternative-metal enthusiast Jeff Neel was called in to handle the Bass work for the band, adding his melodic Eric Avery infused bass ethic into the group. A last minute ad on the prosperous Craig’s List found Thom Hartwick, session drummer from University of Tulsa and the Atlanta Institute of Music for a gig that was to be played later that evening. Filling in with but one rehearsal where only he and Jefe ran through the songs, cemented his place in the group and solidified the line-up that recorded the album - Behold. Later live performances saw the line-up include guitarist Kevin Wolfe, a graduate of both Kansas University and The Musician’s Institute Hollywood, who also cowrote and played lead guitar on the song titled Sometimes. The bands constant cross-pollination of music has created a wide ranging fan base that led one fan to remark: “They sound like a penthouse party where The Stooges meet The Eagles then meet The Doors and overindulge with Jane’s Addiction.”
