Puff and the Pillpoppers Set the World to Flames
Montreal band’s CD debut is a hot spring release
One of Montreal’s most lyrical new bands, “Puff and the Pillpoppers†get set to launch their first CD, “Set the World to Flamesâ€. You won’t regret joining in the celebrations and seeing them live at 8 PM on May 27 at O Patro Vys at 356 Mont Royal East. Tickets are just $6. The new album features forty two minutes of acerbic lyrical commentary peppered with moments of tender reflection, recorded most appropriately at their loft in the RCA building in St. Henri. The group drew inspiration for their multi-era sound from the very atmosphere of this early 20th century factory once used to produce gramaphone equipment.
Can’t wait for the launch? Puff and the Pillpoppers will be opening for Smir at the Sala Rossa 4848 St-Laurent May 24 at 9 PM, following with several shows at the Fringe Fest in June.
Puff and the Pillpoppers are delighted with their growing popularity. In February, two of the yet unmixed tracks from “Set the World to Flamesâ€, “June†and “Devil’s Stride†charted #1 and #2 for weeks on https://www.tradebit.com, a widely popular indie music download site. You can also hear Puff’s tunes across Canada on Global TV. Three of their songs are featured on the soundtrack of “Still Longshotsâ€, a compelling documentary about two generations of street youth premiering on Global TV’s “Global Currents†series May 19th at 7 PM.
Puff and the Pillpoppers formed in 2005 when songwriter and lead singer Simon Bergeron assembled a circle of musician friends to give voice to his songs of love and longing. In 2006, when the band recruited a punkier rhythm section, the energy got kicked-up a notch, and moved the band into new creative directions. Their music is now at once hauntingly melodic and infectiously rhythmic. Featuring the enchanting voices of frontman/guitarist Simon Bergeron and diva Caroline Daigneault, this five-piece Montreal group stirs in elements as diverse as folk, punk, and heavy metal. To sweeten the pot, they throw in an ancient Hammond organ and some vintage guitars. The album also features a guest performance by dopamine guitarist Marc-Andre Raymond on "All That I Am" and "Devil''s Stride".
