COUNTRY: Modern Country, COUNTRY: Americana
Details:
The song SOMEDAY was born earlier this year walking down Buchanan Street in Glasgow en route to the Buchanan Hotel to take part in a fringe concert on the Celtic Fringe of the Celtic Connections Festival. Not so much off-Broadway but off Sauchiehall Street.
Americana country rock folk ballad, waltzing in and out of mood swings, haunting pedal steel guitar, a classic guitar solo and a crescendo of singing; catchy, hummable and infectious.
The genre is egalitarian and working-class and contradicts any preconceptions of Country music and the Nashvillesque Kitsch. It is a truism that the new wave of Country today is the real legacy of the ''New Wave'' of three decades ago.
The timelessness and enduring sentiment of SOMEDAY grabs the listener and one can''t help but get drawn into the song, or, to put it simply, it’s a damn fine tune!
Playing on the debut single EAST COAST OUTFIT are Ian Smith on guitars, keyboards and vocals, Gary Smith on bass, percussion and backing vocals, and, on pedal steel guitar the multi-talented John Wardel who amongst many accolades was in the Eagles tribute band Hotel California for five years. It was recorded at Stealth Studios Glasgow by Ed Macarthur.
The core members of East Coast Outfit are brothers Ian and Gary Smith from Edinburgh, Scotland. As the project develops the intention is to build an ensemble of talent from all quarters of the globe.
As singer-songwriters the brothers have been performing together for over a year in Scotland''s thriving and competitive urban/suburban acoustic music bar scene and established folk club circuit as the acoustic duo Poachers Too (Ian on vocals and nylon strung guitar with Gary on electro-acoustic bass)
They had a burning desire to form a ''real'' band with the full sound and total Americana country rock experience. After finding that working with others, such as Vivien Scotson and Will Purdie on the Marie Curie Charity single The Daffodil Song, the fact that as well as being simply great fun, the bigger band sound worked really well with their material.
It was more than a pleasure therefore to have joining, in a big way, in the inaugural East Coast Outfit line-up for the song SOMEDAY, the talented John Wardel on pedal steel guitar.
Most of the brothers'' appearances and time to date have been spent in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, most notably with the Glasgow Songwriters Club.
In this small country bizarrely the 40 or so miles distance meant that Edinburgh is regarded as being from a far away place, hence the name East Coast Outfit, to distinguish them from the Wild West beyond Newbridge.
As Gary says,
"There''s a universal appeal for this kind of music be it in Glasgow, Galveston or Godalming"
Ian adds,
"It’s just a great song and I want people to buy it so we can do more."
