As you walk down the street of a neon-lit Tokyo, rain drips into pink and green puddles of candy gloss. Above the bustle of the street noise, you hear singing coming from one of the bars. You make your way through the crowd of half-machines and humans to the door of the Happy Cat Club. As you enter, you''re bathed in the blue light of the entryway for a moment, and then plunge into the darkness of the club.
It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, but, after taking off your goggles and giving your eyes a slight rub, you''re able to make out the charcoal-outlined shadows of an audience. They''re seated at tables which appear to ring a stage of some sort, but, no one seems to be performing, at least right now.
You glance around and can start to make out faces, which are lit by the flickering candles on the tables. Its not quite as dark as you thought - your retinas just needed some time to steady themselves. Everyones eyes look Kohl-rimmed, even the robots.
Suddenly, the pulse of a synth pierces through the low murmurs of the crowd. A hush descends like a dream. Almost simultaneously, a guitar kicks in and a voice - like a black velvet cat - slinks its way off the stage and into your ears. From somewhere, you cant tell where, a projector or a hologram winks to life and illuminates the band. Well, it doesn''t exactly illuminate them, as the film clips being projected are somewhat disjointed and provide poor revealing light, but, the clips do provide enough ambient light to be able to see that the band is human, at least as far as you can tell. The members might be some of those meta-creations - a fusion of wood, steel, silicon chips and flesh - that have been whispered about though. You squint to get a better look, but, a Happy Cat hover-waitress blocks your view.
Take your order?, it monotones at you.
Diet Audio, please.
