Details:
Life as a Mirage formed in the summer of 2005. It began when founding member Ryan Whatley was approached about scoring a series of short films. In turn, Ryan asked good friend and fellow sound-design enthusiast Zach Crow to join him for the project. Although the films themselves never materialized, the sessions would produce their first track "Down the Steps". The lo-fi ambience of this recording would set the tone for songs to come, like the two-part concept piece "Connected"/"Disconnected". Soon, the duo''s experimentation would spread to some rather unorthodox methods of field recording. For instance, "Fantastic Expeditions in Underwater Daydreaming" was partly recorded underwater. The track "Claustrophobic Flower" features the sound of recordings being swung, spun, and tossed via tapedeck over a few specifically-placed condenser microphones.
In mid-2006, new members Eric Martin (vocals, synths) and Nick Phillips(tape splicing and additional sequencing) came on board to complete the line-up of Life as a Mirage known today. It was around this time that a very subtle shift occurred as the group began moving toward more concise, song-oriented material. By marrying a love of the avant-garde with a more conventional melodic wisdom, standout tracks like "A Lesson in Cloud Making" and "Dreaming Through Osmosis" were born.
Dreams you can''t quite remember. The ever-fading memory. A feeling that you cannot explain with words. These are just a few ways to describe Life as a Mirage''s self-titled debut album. Eighteen tracks available on compact disc June 12, 2007.
