david joyner,a general contractor and jeff collins, a mechanical technician at nasa, have played music together for over 20 years. george atkins, a machine operator with vitex corp., is related to david and has played music with jeff, david and bobby scarborough on and off for many years. bobby, a retired va. state highway inspector and troy scarborough, a ship building cost analyst, along with delk batten, a farmer, were originally of the gospel music group, called the scarborough family. bobby and troy are father and son and delk is bobby’s son-in-law.
as you can see musical associations, family ties, christian fellowship and longtime friendships were the catalyst that brought these men together to play music and to form what is today known as thunder creek bluegrass gospel band.
thunder creek has been blessed by the lord with the combined musical talent of over 300 years between band members. one of the greatest assets of the group is that five of the six band members sing multiple vocal parts. this variety in voices brings about a harmony that is second to none. some of the band members have written original songs which are on their first cd, roaring run.
thunder creek debuted at millswamp baptist church, smithfield, va, during a sunday night gospel sing.
their next performance took place in wakefield, va. at the old school house that is today known as the wakefield foundation. there will always be a special place in the hearts of the band members for the wakefield foundation, as they have been faithful in having the band exclusively for their yearly fund raisers.
thunder creek has recorded and released two cd’s. roaring run, a bluegrass recording and back to our roots, a bluegrass gospel recording. the group will be going back into the studio in march 2007 to record their third cd, thunder creek by request. thanks to the abundant support of radio stations, newspapers, civic organizations and also the faithful following of fans, the popularity of the band is growing over many parts of the state of virginia, west virginia and north carolina.
thundercreek has held concerts for businesses, ruritan functions, churches, festivals, carshows, state parks, private functions and benefits. the recent purchase of a tour bus has made life on the road much easier. in september of 2005, thundercreek was awarded second place state championship at the virginia folk music association in chester, va.
