Details:
Born in Laurel Canyon, CA, I grew up in Los Angeles and Maui, Hawaii. I have a musical family - my dad Jim sang and played guitar in 60s psych-rock band The Glass Family and later became the recording engineer and mixer for Parliament-Funkadelic, working on many of their classic albums. When I lived in Maui with my mom, she always listened to Bob Marley. I was introduced to musical instruments when my brother Chris taught me to play the guitar.
I decided to learn the flute after getting really into the wind instruments I heard in jazz and Latin music. I loved the organic and personal feeling of playing the flute. To help me improve my sound, I found a great flute teacher in the world-renowned flautist James Newton. Soon, the flute became my primary instrument and my passion.
After many years of playing in bands and contributing to recording sessions, I have finally created my own funk flute inspired songs. My first-ever solo release, The Funky Flute EP (out on Black Ocean Music in June 2007) features 5 instrumentals: 4 originals and 1 cover. I recorded and produced all the music in my home studio.
I always enjoy learning new instruments. I picked up keyboards a few years ago and my recent additions are melodica, mandolin, and tongue drum.
