Details:
I can remember the first time I properly got into music. I used to be into my pop records and my cheesy dance; I even had a fleeting time into the “Fusion” dance scene! That im sure though was more about because I thought I should be listening to it!!!
It wasn’t until I saw two bands, bands that are so two sides of the musical spectrum that it kind of makes me wonder how I got into them both in such a big way. These bands were Nirvana and Oasis. I was 11 when i remember hearing Nirvana.
When I first saw Kurt and the way he connected his frustration and anger, but also his most delicate emotion into such a powerful noise I realised how special music was.
This made me pick up the old nylon string guitar that was stashed in my mums wardrobe! After that there was no going back! Music had taken me away!
I started learning Beatles songs and doin the neighbours heads in by playing the live forever solo very badly. A few of my friends were playing already at this point and we kind of all helped each other learn by jamming away, showing each other new songs we learnt, and generally making noise. I started writing pretty quickly after learning a few chords and starting playing my own compositions. They were rip offs at first, as they always are. I thought id cracked my first hit then i realised it was just underneath the sky by oasis!! Soon though i was writing my own songs and getting what people would call my own sound. I had been involved in music since my teens playing locally with my band at the time Paradime from which I was a songwriter and lead singer. This band took me to Germany for a small club circuit tour and some great pop/rock songs were recorded. When the band broke I went to study Music Tech in London and this is where my song writing started to develop into a necessity to me. Having access to the studios at Uni and building my own studio set-up at home I wrote many songs, and recorded
regularly. I gained a vast musical knowledge from all the different influences that were round me. I started listening to all kinds of music pulling away from the obvious influences that were around at the time. I started experimenting with different tunings and playing styles and singing dynamics.
That brings me to the acoustic side that has heavily influenced me recently. Nick Drakes fingerstyle and drone tunings, Jeff bucklys interesting chord progressions and unorthodox songwriting, and Ryan Adams way of portraying raw emotion.
The songwriting process has always fascinated me from the emotion inside that kickstarts an action to compose, right up to the sound of the recording itself. Its this fascination that has brought me to listening to alot of songwriters and bands that love the craft of melody and emotional connection.
After learning these techniques from artists such as Neil Young, Nick Drake, Ryan Adams, and Neil Finn, the acoustic avenue was opened up. I also learned how to use my voice to its full and it seems to suit the more subtle side of composition better than belting out rocks songs, although I do enjoy that as well! I write obviously what comes to me and sometimes it fits in with what im doing sometimes not.
The thing is I still have a very strong foot in pop, and melody is something I hold very dear. The British guitar movement/ grunge in the 90s made me pick up a guitar and now my head feels as though it’s an open book to all kinds styles and genres. Working as a recording engineer has also opened my mind to all different sounds. In fact I find it hard to not find something good in most music, unless it sounds contrived to me. It’s from this mentality I hope to be a respected singer songwriter in my own right.
Recently i have played the local circuit alot and been involved with the music scene in my area quite intensly. Supporting artists such as Lisa Fitzgibbon, Amy Wadge, Brian Houston and John Power. I feel very comfortable playing on my own and with musicians. Playing on your own forces you to "up" your live performance, you have nothing to hide behind!

Someone armed with an acoustic guitar can be a powerful thing. Some of the most touching musical moments come from the acoustic, before they are transfered to a band situation. Simple songs, stories, laid bare for all to see.
