Details:
We took on this project the winter of ’06-07. Our working title was “A Storm’s a Comin’”. That seemed to fit since just about every time we went in to record or mix, a big winter storm was either moving in or had just moved out. Probably just another one of those situations of a sign gone unheeded…. We ended up calling this one “Don’t Play No Slow Songs”. That’s a pretty good description of our sound. Now, don’t get me wrong, we have a lot of songs that were written slow in our repertoire. It’s just that we take them up to the tempo where they ought to be.

The band talent has Paul on guitar, playing the slide steel on a “Tear My Stillhouse Down” and “Headed South”. Those notes just ooze straight from his brain to the strings; it’s an amazing thing to watch. Brother Matt can play just about anything with strings. Well, he can’t play a puppet but that’s another story. These days he’s settled on the upright bass and whether he’s pluckin’ or slappin’, the sound’s up right all the way. Terri is our lead singer and when you hear her you’ll know why, that girl can sing! Also, people tend to not throw things as much when she’s out front. Me, I just play the banjo, working on it for twenty-some odd years now, still trying to turn it into a paying’ job.

On the songs, it tells who takes the lead on each one but on most you’ll hear us all in there somewhere. When we’re harmonizing, Paul’s usually in the tenor/baritone range, Matt’s giving it that “high lonesome” sound, Terri’s wherever we need her and I bring in the bass. We’ve got a couple of originals on this one, Matt’s “Joshua King” and my “What Was I Thinkin’?”, hope you enjoy those!

Special thanks go out to our Recording Engineer, Ryan Nowels of the Jazz Lab in Edmond, America. We gave him a tough challenge; make us sound like we do when we’re live, but make us sound good. Mix it but don’t make it sound like it’s been mixed. He held up his end of the deal.

Thanks to Jack and Bud for coming to all our rehearsals and gigs. As always, thanks to our families, the world’s greatest, for putting up with us and letting us have our fun. Thanks to the Lord, we hope He’s our biggest Fan!

Steve
