Percussionist Scott Sterling, aka Drumspyder, has been exploring the alchemy of drumming and dance for the better part of a decade. He was a founding member of San Francisco''s avant-circus troupes Awd and Xeno, and in recent years moved on to incorporate Arabic and Latin styles into a distinctively funky and energetic brand of electronic fusion. In addition to his solo work he has played with a variety of emerging middle eastern fusion artists such as Jef Stott (Six Degrees), MC Rai (Embarka), and Ultra Gypsy.
In early 2005 Scott began working with dancer/choreographer Kristina Canizares, who made vital contributions to the Bay area tribal bellydance scene (as a dancer and choreographer with Ultra Gypsy), but also has a background in Cuban and Brazilian dance. Together they forged some innovative and award-winning drum solo and bellydance combinations, then went on to form a full-fledged dance troupe, the Nekyia.
This album is the soundtrack for the Nekyia''s live performance repertoire, with the addition of "Summer''s Drum Solo", developed with dancer Summer Evert for the recent Ansuya bellydance showcase in San Francisco.
Drumspyder and the Nekyia perform frequently in the Bay Area and the west coast.
