Details:
David Grant that was his reason for going to San Jois soaring above the clouds since the release of his debut CD "First Flight".
David has logged countles hours, both on his guiCtar and in the cockpit. By now, you probably
realize that David Grant is both a guitarist and an airline pilot. He is equally comfortable soaring
on the fretboard and flying at 30,000 feet.
David began playing guitar just before his senior year in high school in his home town of
Richmond, California. He bought the George Benson ''Breezin'' album. "The tunes on the back of the
album, ''Affirmation'', So This is Love'', and ''Lady'' just had me mezmorized. I listened to them over
and over and over, all summer long that summer", David says.
David started college at San Jose State University in San Jose, CA. During his sophmore year at SJSU, he
was asked to join a Top 40 band called ''Chain Reaction". The band played various clubs and events around
the south bay area until they split up one year later. After the band broke up he enrolled in various jazz
improvization classess and started taking flying lessons; after all his major at SJSU was aeronautics, and
se State. But his guitar was never very far from him.
It was also at San Jose where he meet Todd Soo-Hoo, an electrical engineering major who was a drummer/keyboardist
in the jazz improv classes, and Gary Green, a guitarist/bassist from Cal State Hayward. After college the three
would go on to form the group ''Private Practice'', with the addition of Rich Louie on drums. The group played street festivals,
weddings and coffee houses in the Bay Area and in the LA area. Private Practice still plays a wedding or two each year.
David grew up musically in the San Francisco Bay Area so there was ample opportunity to see other
talented jazz musicians. The Curtis Ohlson Group was the jazz fusion group that David and his bandmates
would go see regularly thus, Curtis Ohlson became good friend with the members of Private Practice.
David left California in 1993 to pursue a flying career in earnest, While doing so he played jam sessions and
got occassional calls for gigs. David has played at clubs in most of the lower 48 states, thanks to his airline
career.
When David felt that it was time to record, he was faced with the choice of starting the project in Atlanta, where he
now lives, or doing it in the Bay Area. There were talented musicians in both locations, but the decision was made to record
the project back in Oakland 1) because it was home and 2) beacuse it was where he learned about the types of music that he had
invisioned for the project. Curtis Ohlson had started his own studio (Ohlsonic Studios) in Oakland,CA and David decided to record with his good friend.
And there you have it "First Flight", David Grant''s first recording project, 3 years in the making. The project features; Curtis Ohlson, who toured as Ray Charles'' bassist for 7 years; Ray Obiedo, bay area guitarist who has 7 solo albums to his credit; David Garibaldi, famed drummer with Tower Of Power; Dave Mathews, organ player with Etta James; noted bay area drummer Paul VanWageningen, and world class percussionist Michael Spiro.
The CD includes covers of tunes by Robben Ford, George Benson, Frank Gambale, Wayne Henderson and Sheila E. Plus, there are 5 original tunes by David Grant. Certainly there is something for every jazz fusion lover!!
Sit back, relax and enjoy your "First Flight".
