Discovered by Grammy Award-winning R & B singer/songwriter R. Kelly in 2000, Rebecca F. learned much from the "Greatest Hitwriter of the 90s" while signed to Rockland Records (of https://www.tradebit.com "Fiesta" and "Like a Real Freak" fame). The place was Chicago Trax recording studio, home to Ministry frontman Al Jourgenson, and, of course, R. Kelly.
Also in the halls of this magic place Rebecca F. met Colin McGeehan, whose classical violin studies at Northwestern University coupled with his love of Stevie Ray Vaughn helped create The Meme sound. Check out more music at https://www.tradebit.com
You may have heard Rebecca F. & The Memes on Chicago rock station WXRT (93.1 FM) when Richard Milne featured "Under the Big White Star" on Local Anesthetic in February 2006. Or when Jonathon Brandmeier played "Juda" during The Loop''s (97.9 FM) annual Make-A-Wish Telethon in December 2005. Or in Spring of 2004, when Randi Rhodes of Air America played Rebecca F.''s single, "Beat the Bushes" to rave reviews.

Memes Spread Sound

Rebecca F., an Illinois native who leads Rebecca F. & the Memes, has given a lot of thought to the way people experience music -- and the way they experience the world.
"A meme is a cultural gene," F. says, explaining her group''s name. "Basically, we humans (by consensus) determine what cultural information is valuable enough to pass from one generation to the next throughout time. For example, arithmetic is a meme, and so is sewing. The question is: What memes are we passing on in the modern world?"
Rebecca F. & the Memes are celebrating the release of their new EP, "It''s All About You," with a concert tonight at Chicago''s Double Door nightclub.
"Looking around, I sometimes feel like our current culture is built on exclusion," F. says. "One group of people is ''cool'' or ''hot'' precisely because it does not include another group of people. Needless to say, I think that since we''re all humans, we belong in the same group. I like the idea of inclusion, so maybe that''s what you''re hearing in the lyrics."
The Memes include violinist Colin McGeehan, from Arlington, Va., and drummer Bert Kenerson, from Chicago, Il., among others.
"To me, the gap between what we see and hear on the TV and radio, and what we experience in our real lives, is widening. I''d like to help change that," F. says. "Let''s face it: How many people eat a bowl of biting cockroaches for the chance to win 50 grand on a daily basis? Unless we''re speaking metaphorically, I don''t know any of them."
