Details:
In early 2000, five young men of various musical abilities, backgrounds and influences started a band. That band is Settlers Creek. “Lucas, Chris, Sean and I had all jammed in another band called Country Mile in high school.” explains Greg. “It was fun but we disbanded due to difference in direction.” “Bryce, Sean and myself were looking for guy’s to complete a group that was about to disband.” adds Lucas. That’s when Chris got the call. “Lucas called me up and offered me a spot playing keys in a new band with Bryce, Sean and himself. I was all in but only if my brother Greg went with me. They said, ‘we need someone on bass’ and so we handed Greg a bass guitar; Which he seemed to learn in a week.” laughs Chris.

Cutting their teeth on old country standards and classic rock tunes, the band graduated from basement rehearsals to local fairs, festivals and bars. For the next decade, Lucas, Bryce, Sean, Greg and Chris would maintain a rigorous rehearsal schedule while performing throughout Ontario. All the while slowly and consistently finding their sound and growing their following. In January of 2010 after thousands of shows, years of writing and a decade of refining their sound, Settlers Creek Band headed into the studio to begin their recording career.

The recording studio was a new stage for this group and it presents it’s own challenges. “We have five guy’s here.” says Lucas. “A rock guy, a traditional country guy, a new country guy, a pop guy, and an indie guy. These personalities didn’t exist two years ago in Settlers! But, when you get everyone into the studio and everyone wants this to be the best it can be, these different personalities come out and it translates into the music. It’s a cool process.”

Not opting to go the typical “Nashville route” that seems to be the norm in the industry, the boys called up an unknown producer to get their sound onto tape. “Sean [Gugula] brought this whole other dimension to the project. He’s very savvy and creative in the studio with a great energy.” says Lucas. “Gugula also brought that outside opinion we needed. We’re very aware of what we don’t want, but not alway’s sure what we want. He helped us find that.” adds Sean.

They also went with a more Indie approach to mixing by using Darryl Neudorf of Blue Rodeo and Neko Case fame. “Darryl is just an awesome guy period! He took what we did, turned the dial to 11 and infused this vibe that rides the line between Indie and mainstream. He has an amazing ability to do that. He shaped us and ultimately created the sound of this record.” says Lucas.

Working harder than ever and using the tried and true methods of focus, persistence, patience and perspiration and a ‘reap what you sow’ attitude; Settlers Creek Band is continuing to establish themselves as a band that is making their own way as opposed to following. The road may be longer, but when you get to the end and look back you’ll see their Line in the Dirt.
