Kareem W. Julien, (born January 17, 1988), better known by his stage name shapeL is a Trinidadian/American rapper, songwriter and producer. Currently a member of the rap trio Bow2no1, alongside Vinnie That Guinea (Vincent Aroneo) and Mickey P (Michael Almendral), he joined and co-founded the group as a teenager in high school.
*Early Life*
shapeL was born Kareem W. Julien, grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey till he moved to South River, New Jersey in his early teens. He is one of three children born to a Trinidadian father and Trinidadian/Venezuelan mother. He is the first member of his family to be born in America. When Kareem was young, he originally aspired to be a clothing designer. Drawing sketches of mens'' clothing, it wasn''t long before he realized he had a passion for art and creativity. This dream however was eventually overshadowed by his desire to become a professional recording artist as he began participating in freestyle battles at South River High School. It was there where he received his current moniker, shapeL, from fellow classmates who claimed Kareem resembled the famous comedian Dave Chappelle. Kareem initially resented this alias, but the name stuck as his popularity grew as a freestyle performer.
*Music Career*
Kareem was discovered by local freestyle performer/ MC Vinnie That Guinea. It was Vinnie who introduced shapeL to the idea of rapping and recording professionally, inviting shapeL to his Studio sessions at Trax East in South River. Through Vinnie, shapeL was introduced to Mickey P, and the group collectively with other former artist recorded Bow2no1''s first single- Born Loser. The track was a great success locally throughout South River, and officially merited the group popularity, being the first rap group to professionally record a song in their school.
shapeL currently works alongside Craig "Worldarama" Bryant, his manager, and his manager''s production company Grind Hard TV.
