Details:
“Hoping” is the last track on the underground CD “Axis: Bold as Evil” by tissues4issues (2004). Geoff Cleveland wrote the music and plays piano, and Sunny Kim wrote the bilingual lyrics and sings. The song expresses the feeling of unrequited love, which makes it more about “hoping against hope” than just “Hoping”.
The emotional and lyrical feeling of this song is intended to provide the listener with a human experience, as if Sunny & Geoff are in the room telling you a sad story through music. If the listener wells up with tears, we’ve done our job. A couple of songs that have a similar feel, if not sound, are Thad Jones’ “A Child is Born” and Joni Mitchell’s “The Last Time I Saw Richard”.
tissues4issues was a short-lived collaboration between Sunny Kim & Geoff Cleveland (with bass & drums on the other, as-yet-unreleased tracks) in Colorado from 2002-2003.
Since then, Sunny Kim has become an established innovator as leader of Myth of Mitch and a member of Prana Trio. As a “sideman”, she has performed with many masters of music, including recordings with the (jazz trombonist) Roswell Rudd Quartet (“Keep Your Heart Right”, 2008), on which she displays the range, swing and personality of a jazz virtuoso, and bassist Trevor Dunn’s hard rock project Madlove (“White With Foam”, 2009), where she shows her rockstar side. She currently lives in South Korea.
Before tissues4issues, Geoff Cleveland released the critically acclaimed jazz CD “Donut Storm” (1993), was leader of the avant-garde jazz collective The Emergency Broadcast Players (1995-2000, including the 1997 CD “Only a Test”) and was a founding member of the “post-apocalyptic electro-jazz” band Sons of Armageddon. The Emergency Broadcast Players’ members included trumpeter Ron Miles and current Kneebody members Kaveh Rastegar (bass, drums) and Shane Endsley (trumpet, drums). Since tissues4issues, Cleveland has most notably been the leader of Hate Camels, a band that plays his heavy metal & jazz-inspired compositions, most of which are tributes to dead satirists (comedians & such). Hate Camels’ 2007 CD “Death Comedy Jams” is still popular, especially the “hit single” “Mitch Hedberg”. He still lives in Denver where tissues4issues was formed.
