From the liner notes:
I met Mike O’Connell some time in the fall of 2007. Actually, I had
known Mike for of number of years before that, but I always thought
he was sort of a geek, not the kind of guy you’d want to hang around
with. I’d seen Mike play with his self-titled trio in a number of clubs
around Binghamton, but it wasn’t until I saw him play with Prism, a
local band playing weddings and parties, that I really understood the
breadth of his chops. Mike rocked pretty hard for a geeky white guy,
and sang with equal zeal. But he played rock with a sensitivity that did
not betray his jazz roots.
After I saw Mike play with Prism, I discovered that he had a fairly well-
developed alter ego that played in a Phish-flavored jam band. Who
knew? Mike played the piano in a group that included the elusive Brian
Briggs, a New Orleans guitarist known for his antics on and off the stage.
Alas, Mike and Brian never traveled to the studio together, and the two
can be heard only on bootleg recordings and the extremely rare live
appearance. I was determined to get Mike O’Connell into the studio,
with or without Brian Briggs, to put rock to record.
At first Mike was hesitant about the idea. He pointed to the
commercial success of his jazz offerings, Wallpaper Jam and Live ’n
On Q, and cited problems with earlier attempts at recording rock ’n roll.
This went on for a year, but by summer 2009 we had reached a
compromise. The new album would include standard Wallpaper Jam-
type recordings with Mike’s trio, but be laced with rock and funk as
well: a summit meeting of Mike’s various alter egos. The results speak
for themselves.
