Details:
Afro-Caribbean music grew from historical processes of cultural syncretism between descendents of African slaves and Hispano-Europeans, and in the case of Veracruz, the intermixing of the indigenous cultures of that land as well.
The principal objective of CORAZÓN SUR is to diffuse this rich Caribbean music, continuing and deepening the process of cultural syncretism by adapting Mexican music to Caribbean and Veracruzian rhythms and structures. This musical fusion is manifested in songs such as “La Bruja,” which is a traditional son from Veracruz, interpreted as a cha-cha-cha.
CORAZÓN SUR plays classic Latin Jazz songs as well as their own compositions of this genre. Songs like “Danzón para llevar,” which utilizes characteristics of the traditional danzón and fuses it with a more modern structure, illustrate this Latin Jazz influence.
Another goal of CORAZÓN SUR is to broaden the audience of the music of Mexican and Latin American composers such as Rafael Campos, Agustín Lara, David Haro, Guti Cárdenas, Mario Ruíz Armengol, among others. These composers represent a style of music very distinct from the genres of Mexican music that have been typically distributed throughout the United States and the world. In this sense, CORAZÓN SUR promotes and creates awareness about the musical richness and diversity of Mexico, widening the narrow view that the world has of Latin America.
