Featuring Brian Singhas on bass and vocals, Zack Humphrey on drums and Fadi Hamdan on Guitar, the trio has been honing their chops for the past 6 years while slowly amassing a sizable fan base in their native state. The band has relocated to Austin TX as of February 2010.
The band is by no means a one trick pony. Their focus has been devoted to playing a variety of styles that are both catchy and energetic. ‘We just play what sounds good to us. There’s no need to typecast ourselves into any single genre’ drummer Humphrey explains. It is indeed difficult to categorize the music, as their new CD makes clear. Drawing from a myriad of influences from Tool to John Prine, Mighty Zorgon’s sound remains its own: indescribable, yet strangely familiar. ‘The band weaves a unique musical tapestry while still remaining accessible’ explains Jessie Anderson of Chapel Hill‘s The Stagger.
Recorded on a small budget in an equally small studio (Nightsound Studios of Carborro, NC), the album’s sound reflects the band’s emphasis on a do-it-yourself type feel. ‘With everything sounding so polished and perfect these days, we wanted the band to come off as being human’ explains engineer Shaun Sandor, who recorded the band. ‘The music speaks for itself.’ Nightsound Owner Chris Wimberley adds.
Live Mighty Zorgon is a sight to behold on its own. Many songs utilize odd time signatures and inventive chord structures, creating a rock sound that is both intelligent and soulful. The band’s raw, yet refined energy smacks its audience in the face without them realizing what happened. Fadi’s technical skill on the guitar is plainly evident in his attention to detail while pounding out hard-hitting melodies. Singhas’ unique vocal style cuts through to deliver poetic lyrics that almost juxtapose the music itself. The rock solid rhythm duo of Zack / Singhas offers a more unique take on the drums and bass than is usually seen. ‘I have rarely heard a typical beat coming from Zack, he’s too crazy for that’ Paul Hartley from Chapel Hill based band Robobilly explains. ‘I have never seen a band quite like them’ one fan admits after a show at The Cave in Chapel Hill.
The self titled debut is poised to be a jumping off point for a band that has nowhere else to go but up. Hard-hitting, energetic and well composed, it is a great example of what this band is capable of doing. With more time in Austin’s music scene, Mighty Zorgon is sure to become a band to be reckoned with.
