The Nite Lights are happy to announce the release of their newest recording entitled, Tumbling Hearts EP. Recorded entirely in frontman Joe Boruchow''s South Philly basement, the new ep is a rock/pop experiment that combines intricate guitars and drum machines to create genre defying pop songs and instrumentals. Drawing on influences as diverse as Link Wray and Arthur Russell, the Tumbling Hearts EP spans a broad emotional and stylistic spectrum. For a Minute There, written after Boruchow went to a movie where the film was abruptly stopped when an audience member had a medical emergency, tells the story of a man who dies at the cinema; the instrumental, Eureka (the main melody was conceived while vacuuming) is a joyful homage to early sixties instrumental rock and roll and The Kensington Strangler imagines terror under the el with guitars evoking church bells and passing trains! Boruchow says the music reflects his surroundings, "it''s a strange world with lots of rough edges."
Joe Boruchow''s bold black and white wheat-pastes, which he makes from intricate paper cutouts, have become a mainstay of Philadelphia street art. What most people don''t know, however, is that Boruchow started by making posters for The Nite Lights. He has continued his attempts to combine his art with his music since forming The Nite Lights in 2001 with fellow guitarist, Stevie Burkitt. Growing up in the DC suburbs of the 80''s and 90''s the high-school classmates shunned the prevailing hardcore/indie sound of the era and have been creating their unique brand of rock and roll ever since.
The Nite Lights were initially at loss for what to do after 2010''s Stuffed Animals DVD where the band composed and performed a soundtrack to an animated slide show of Boruchow''s award winning graphic novel. However, the band was inspired into rapid production early in 2011 after bassist Swifty Morgan brought a hand-me-down digital eight track to Boruchow''s South Philadelphia home. The band was soon at work on this latest batch of songs. The resulting ep is the first of many the band hopes to put out every few months, culminating in a series of live performances that will be accompanied by projections made from Boruchow''s iconic cutouts. Stay tuned!
