Persian music has a strong background when it comes to solo instrumentals and vocals. Improvisation is also a salient characteristic. With both, especially having the instrumentalist as the singer, the story telling can go back to its roots in hundreds of years ago.
"In Turn" is a rather contemporary interpretation of such a story telling, mingling both traditional and modern mode combinations and free rhythm improvisations.
Most pieces contain pre-composed melodies that are developed as performed and each piece is recorded in a single take and has a feeling of a live performance.
In the first and last two pieces ("just upon a time" and "the last turn") that mark the beginning and ending of the journey, words come from two great Persian poets. "Just upon a time" goes with a poem by Roudaki (one of the oldest recongnized Persian poets, 10th century) and "The last turn" illustrates an eminent poem by Ahmad Shamlu (one of the most celebrated contemporary poets in Iran).
