MP3 Joe Carter - The Samba Rio Trio
This set features beautiful and expertly played Brazilian jazz as performed by guitarist Joe Carter, bassist Nilson Malta, and drummer Portinho. Several Jobim songs, Blue Mitchell''s "Fungii Mama," and a couple Carter originals are in the repertoire, with each of the tunes featuring strong melodies, pretty guitar, and close interplay between the musicians. All of Joe Carter''s recordings are tasteful and rewarding, and this one is no exception. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

The music of this CD was recorded with a feeling of fun and fellowship that tied the members of this working trio together. Seldom has there been such a relaxed session, seldom have three musicians reacted so enthusiastically to what was supposed to be their work.
The feeling, or better still the pleasure, of being associated with the making of the music and the continuity of style, pervaded everything together with the warm, gracious personality of the leader, guitarist Joe Carter. Carter, part of the international music scene since the 1980s, has been privileged to record with such great Jazz artists Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Cecil Payne and others. Carter is a jazzman who enjoys the past and appreciates the present but what is most important to him is the future because he continues to create better music as he reaps the benefits of his creative endeavors. The guitarist has performed around the world, most notably Franc, India, Germany, etc., however the turning point of his career and life was certainly his many performances in Brazil where he also had the opportunity to teach several master classes and record with many noted Brazilian artists. This CD is the latest product of Carter’s Brazilian experience as he relied on the Brazilian repertoire that he reassures so much and for this he has naturally chosen two Brazilian accompanists, bassist Nilson Matta and the legendary drummer Portinho.
Four of the compositions are by Antonio Carlos Jobim (including a rather unique samba version of INSENSATEZ), whom Carter cites as one of his main sources of inspiration. Two of the songs are by Matta and one by Mauricio Einhorn, considered by many to be the greatest harmonica player alive. Also recorded, FUNGI MAMA, composed by the late trumpet player Blue Mitchell. Included are two compositions by Carter featuring his writing in the Brazilian style for the first time. SAMBA CONTENTE is based on the partido alto type of samba rhythm and SONHO DE MARINA is a samba cancion, typical of the type of romantic ballad that would have been sung by Elizeth Cardoso or Elis Regina. The last track is a medley of two Jobim songs, AMOR EM PAZ and INUTIL PAISAGEM, showcasing Carter’s delicate, understated finger-style approach to the compositions. Upon hearing this selection it becomes clear why renown French writer Francois Postiff has said: “One can feel that Joe Carter plays only to create beauty.”
Today Joe Carter plays better than ever. The future of American Jazz, sparked by the continuous development of multi-directional musical approaches, is as hopeful as ever. Artists like Joe Carter are to be commended for developing that future with all the wisdom, all the good taste, all the skills and daring at their command. Carter is certainly following that path, knowing there is only one way to go and that is forward!
