"... You''ll walk with me from mountain peak to mountain peak... and the valleys in between..."
Herein lies the crux of Tommy Faulk''s independent release Valleys in Between. It''s a look into the thoughts of one person... who may or may not have the same struggles and victories as you.
"I''ve always tried to write from where I am and what I''m going through. Everyone that I''ve come to truly respect and do my best to learn from has shown me that. The truth is, however, there are some lessons you learn and seasons you go through that really do not seem to yield any artistic response. At least that''s how it seemed to me for a while... A number of these songs were birthed out of a season of trust and search that, in some ways, isn''t over... Some may feel this way, you know? ... You try and try to define who you are and where you''re heading and one day you look up and it''s all different. Maybe nothing around you has changed but, in your heart, you know that something has started inside of you; a need to re-grasp what you were holding onto... Of course, your constant grip remains firmly on Jesus because if you lose that, then you REALLY have nothing, but, ... as you try to go back, you begin to understand that grip is gone... You''ve suddenly been challenged to change... The old and familiar is now becoming foreign and a small dot in your rear-view mirror... And you ask God, ''what am I supposed to be learning, here?'' ... ... ... ...
I wrote the title track out of that feeling. There have been may times that I''ve felt terrible because I thought that I wasn''t trying hard enough or praying long enough... but the truth is, I know what I need to be doing... and I need to keep doing it until an answer comes... and even then, I''ll keep doing it. It''s that innate knowledge inside of every believer... and sometimes non-believers as well... no matter what happens, I know that He''ll be there for me. I know that Christ is the reason I''m here and His heart is my life. At times I feel like I may not know who I am while I''m walking this life out... but the point is, I keep walking... and Christ shows me who I''m becoming as I do it."
Valleys in Between is a mixture of emotion as well as a mixture of styles; some acoustic, some quasi-folk/bluegrass, some rock... but at the heart of the project is a truth that Tommy hopes everyone finds.
"No matter what place you find yourself in, you have to keep moving... you have to keep going. If you stay on the mountain or in the valley... eventually you''ll use every resource there is to be had there and then, you''ll be left with nothing. There are times to stop and rest, but, the decision to set up camp permanently is a decision to stagnate eventually. Every step forward will inevitably lead you upward... then inevitably downward... The number of peaks and valleys we see is up to our Father; it''s our decision to walk them out with Him as our guide."
Coming from a musical family, as well as a strong Christian faith, Tommy has had the chance to see first hand the influence His Savior can make through melody.
"I''ve had the privilege of being involved in music and worship since I was really young. God has shown and taught me a great deal through making music for Him. As long as He allows me to do this, I''m going to do it. There''s something about the power of unity in song; when we''re all going to the same place together, seeing the same truth together, worshiping God together... it''s beyond words... it''s powerful. I''m so grateful to be able to do this and will continue to learn all I can as I walk down this road."
