THE South East of South Australia is fertile ground for country music – once home to the famed Chambers family and also producing multiple TIARA winner Sandra Humphries.
Now, a new talent has emerged from the Limestone Coast with the release of captivating singer/songwriter Christy Wallace’s debut album.
Angel on Earth features 13 deeply personal and sometimes profound original songs, from mournful ballads to smooth grooves and upbeat country.
Recorded at Bill Chambers'' studio on the central coast, north of Sydney, the collection is the realisation of the Mount Gambier woman’s dream to share her songs in a tasteful and professional recording.
From the sparse opening title track reflecting on a lost life, to the unique love song Boggy Creek, tribute to seaside hamlet Beachport and hopeful upbeat closing track Rainbow, the refreshing songwriting is full of emotion.
The songs are based on experience and observation and performances are delivered firmly in the singer/songwriter tradition, crossing musical boundaries.
"My songwriting has never been about trying to fit into a genre or scene, but expressing myself - it''s like therapy," Christy said.
While Christy’s untainted and honest voice carries the songs with conviction, the addition of Chambers’ effortless lap-steel and other guitar work, fiddle by Mick Albeck and harmonies by Katie Brianna embellish the songs to create a production that will captivate listeners.
Bill Chambers describes the album as one of the best debut releases he has ever worked on.
“Christy’s voice brings to mind two of my favourite singers – Iris Dement and Australia’s Catherine Britt,” he said.
“Real life songs and simple folkie production combine to make Christy’s album appealing to any music fan.”
The CD has been released independently and is now available in limited stores, at live performances and online.
