Barry Patriquin’s life story has been one of changes and challenges. It’s a story of tragedy and triumph that once again proves that hard circumstances don’t necessarily mean the end of the road; in fact, they can be the start of something quite amazing.
In 1981, Barry was involved in a single vehicle car accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury. As a result, he uses a wheelchair for mobility purposes. Adjusting to life as a chair-user was a serious struggle, and it would take several years after his accident before Barry would get to the point where he would begin to get serious about participating in life, once again. Patriquin believes that his faith in Christ was the one thing that put purpose and meaning back into his life. And, “My family has been and is still very supportive. They have sacrificed much as a result of my accident, and I will be forever in their debt.”
It’s not surprising that Patriquin would find his way back to sports, considering his background prior to his accident. As a result, Barry has traveled the world participating in sporting events as a world-class racer. He was a member of the Canadian Paralympics’ Team from 2000—2008. With two Paralympics and a couple World Championships to his credit, he has competed against the best in the world and finished respectably. The highlight of his career would be a 5th place finish at the Sydney Paralympics in the one hundred meters and a bronze medal, as part of the 100-meter relay team.
In 2008, Barry retired from racing but continues to be involved at the local level helping develop a Paralympics Program in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
It was now time to finish something he had started back in 2002 when he hooked up with another singer/songwriter, Terry Kelly. Patriquin had been writing for sometime, but he credits Kelly for helping him develop as both a writer and a singer. In fact, it was Terry’s encouragement and patience that has played a huge part in Patriquin’s upcoming debut album. What is more, Terry has produced, co-written and sung on this soon to be released CD—“The Way Things Go.”
The album is an introspective work that offers up some driving energy along with songs that have subtle melodies. “With regard to genre, I would describe it as folk-rock,” said Patriquin. “I guess you could say it’s a combination of all the musical influences I heard growing up and what I listen to today. I was very fortunate to have been exposed to many different types of music: country, gospel, pop and rock-and-roll. Music is a big part of my family’s life. Both my parents sing and play instruments and they appreciative different musical styles that have influenced what I write and sing. My mother is probably my biggest fan; she has an excellent ear when it comes to my singing. I bounce most of my material off her to get her opinion. Most times she is right on the money. I will be forever grateful for the unconditional love, support and encouragement that I have always received from my family and friends.”
My hope is that there are songs on the album that will touch the hearts and minds of all those who give it a listen. Music has a way of relating to the real circumstances in one’s life. It’s done that for me, and I trust it will do the same for you.
