Details:
Banana Hammock was the brainchild of three SF Bay Area dudes, those being Timmy G, Joe Burke, and Seth Haynes, who initially intended on creating a band that “kinda sounded like the Police”. In that attempt, they failed miserably; however, what emerged from that creative collaboration and partnership was a strange amalgam of rock, latin grooves, “spy” music spaghetti western guitar playing, and experimental jazz. Heavily influenced by the likes of John Zorn, Mr. Bungle, Japanese noise bands like the Boredoms, jazz/latin/reggae/world music, and film scores, Banana Hammock succeeded in creating a sound all their own.
This album, “Notus Mi Genious”, is a times challenging, at time ridiculously poppy, at times crushingly heavy, and at times beautiful; it is an eclectic, wildly varied album, but it somehow manages to maintain a coherent vibe throughout. It is a study in contrasts, in beauty and chaos, or perhaps beauty within chaos. It is a rewarding listen that grows on you over time, filled with nuance and excellent musicianship. At times, it succeeds in producing sweeping cinematic beauty, sometimes juxtaposed with chaos and destruction; at other times, it simply melts your face.
