Bringing a shaft of light to the musical gloom come this band of seasoned-in-the-wood players from the Welsh Marches. They have been developing the habit of descending on venues around the border, with the one aim of dropping their version of the The Truth on music lovers of all persuasions, before hightailing it back into the green hills from whence they came.
Oiling the groove with pulse perfect drumming is George Jackson, abetted by Tommy Mills, whose sinuous double bass playing has been favourably compared to being nuzzled by a dolphin! Riding the rhythms with midnight lightning guitar licks comes new boy Will Barnes, a recent convert to the sparse direct guitar-driven songs of Brian Copsey who fronts the band collectively known as BackRoadHome,
Here’s what Brian has to say to anyone tired of early 21st C musical gridlock:
“We’re called BackRoadHome because we avoid the obvious, predefined route to where anyone might need to get back to. What we do instead is to take listeners on an extended guided detour, journeying over a funky plateau of folkblues, past the Irie heights of sweet reggae riddim, and down, dancing all the way, through a lush and numinous forest landscape of jazz-inflected melody until, hitting the spot, we dive deep into the well of collective experience - and surface with something original but familiar.
BackRoadHome nurture positivity, and broadcast the resultant seed on the musical breeze that blows whenever sweet life-affirming music is being generated. There’s no drive-in McDonald’s on this road, we’re more inclined to pack a soulfood picnic, and pull in for a session somewhere that isn’t on the tourist map. But eventually BackRoadHome take you there: back to your roots, to where it’s at, the place where we can all dig and be dug.
