From gentle lullabies to funeral marches to phantasmic sound clouds, this compilation represents several years worth of music created by composer Ben Phelps for the Rogue Artist Ensemble, a multidisciplinary theater collective based in Los Angeles.
Born in Sacramento, California, composer and percussionist Ben Phelps is currently earning a reputation as one of Southern California’s most exciting young musicians. His music has been performed across the country, from the Minnesota Orchestra to the Oregon Bach Festival, at the Aspen Music Festival, by the UCLA Percussion Ensemble, the USC Contemporary Music Ensemble, and by the internationally acclaimed Verderh Trio. His work with the pioneering theater company Rogue Artists Ensemble has been called “enchanting” by the LAWeekly and “sonically brilliant” by the OCWeekly.
The award-winning Rogue Artists Ensemble differs from other theater companies in that it''s run by a collective of multidisciplinary artists and designers rather than by actors, writers or directors. By combining ancient storytelling techniques (music, dance, masks, puppetry) with modern technology (digital media, special effects and theatrical illusions), the Rogues cultivate a unique style of live performance unlike any other. They define the combined use of these and other underrepresented art forms as Hyper-theater.
