Details:
San Francisco based singer/songwriter Davis Jones prepares to release Royal Jelly, a sticky sweet batch of songs served in a jar of indie folk. It is his second consecutive collaboration with Tim Mooney (American Music Club, Chuck Prophet, Mark Kozelek) of Closer Recording, who also plays drums on the album. This is Davis’ 6th independent release since 2005.

Royal Jelly is literally a fluid secreted by worker bees and fed to all of the larvae of the colony. When the worker bees are ready for a new queen they select several larvae to receive higher amounts of the substance contributing to their transformation into queens.

For the album, the term is a metaphor for the set of experiences that make us all unique beings. The songs are characterized by deeply personal writing and warm, rich instrumentation. It is a story focused on the formative experiences of life, told in a way that is relatable and engaging.

The soul of the music is worn and hopeful. It’s comforting but reaches for something more. The spacious arrangements complement the songwriting for deep, vivid and haunting colors. It fits in with the sincerity of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon and the intimacy of Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker while maintaining a character all its own.

When speaking of the direction for the album, Davis says “it always feels important for the songs to fit together. I write and record consistently so each of my albums is a collection of thoughts or moments that occurred within a year’s time.” He continues, “I’ve never been one to force a certain sound or style. I really just want to capture what happens with the musicians in the room. If I trust in the process and the other players, the personality of the album will come forward on its own.”

The recording process was organic, mostly live and reliant on analog tape for much of the basic tracking. Although a similar approach was used for Davis’ previous album Shadows & Gardens (2009) the music has matured to a new level. “From a songwriting perspective I dug deep. To get to a point of acceptance I had to allow myself to be vulnerable. The writing reflects that process.”

Davis continues to evolve his stripped down sound into increasingly confident expression. Royal Jelly, the next step forward, will be released on May 13, 2011.
