Details:
Though this Rock/Pop band of three Mexicans and two Nicaraguans has gone through many changes since its beginning, Dear Matthew has always been known through its positive message and innovating sound.

Dear Matthew begins in Nicaragua in the summer of 1998 under the name GenX when three siblings, Josh Garcia, Sarah Garcia and David (Checky) Garcia, get involved in music after taking their first classes with their teacher, Reynaldo Ruiz. With the help of Israel Castro (now sub-director of the Baptist Music Conservatory) the band begins its career with Sarah on lead vocals, Josh on the saxophone and Checky on the drums.

The year 2000 brings the first changes in the band. At the Baptist Music Conservatory the Garcias meet Noel Toruño, who joins the band as the keyboard player. With the new member, GenX explores Latin rhythms. Leonid Saballos and Darling Abdalah are also invited into the band after meeting them in High School. With these members the band consolidates itself. Their repertoire includes only covers of many artists including Torre Fuerte, Jesús Adrián Romero, and Marcos Witt

The band’s first international tour occurs only one year later when they travel to Mexico. They perform in many events in Mexico City and Puebla. At every show, the crowd awes them as they see that the oldest member of the group is only 13, Checky being the youngest at 9. Darling leaves the band shortly after returning to Nicaragua.

Soon, GenX realizes that they need a guitar player and they invite John Barbacci to the band. Allan Blandon and Jonathan Garcia also join the band as backup vocals shortly after Darling leaves. They write and record their first single, Yo Te Amo (I Love You). Josh leaves the saxophone behind as he discovers his singing ability.

In the summer of 2003 the band briefly separates after John returns to the US. Soon they get back together and invite Michael Vargas to cover lead guitars. Michael moves to the US a year later. GenX acquires a more Ska oriented sound, influenced by bands like Rescate and Los Pericos. In 2004, Noel leaves the band.

Andres Larios begins playing with GenX soon after the fall of 2004, and though the band is almost inactive he develops his talent on the keyboard. Josh picks up the guitar and becomes lead vocal. The band continues toward a Rock/Pop style.

In the summer of 2005, Josh is left to play bass as Leonid leaves to college in the US. At the end of that year, GenX shares stage for the first time with an international band. The band is invited to open for the Mexican band Rojo. Andres experiments with the guitar, alternating between both instruments. They continue this way for almost two years and then meet Beto Olivares who joins them on the guitar.

On June 30th of 2007 GenX participates in a battle of bands organized by a local radio station. To classify, the bands must perform two cover songs and one original. Until that moment, GenX only plays songs by other artists, but they decide to write a song. After three days of writing, they come up with Siempre Gritaré. The band takes first place in the competition.

The band receives another invitation to open for a major band in June of 2007, this time opening the concert for Annette Moreno in Masaya, Nicaragua. Because of production complications, they are forced to play at the end of the concert. Even though most of the crowd leaves after listening to the main artist, some stay to hear GenX. What the band doesn’t know is that Annette Moreno is listening from backstage and takes interest in the band.

Soon after, Annette Moreno is decided to hire Checky to be part of her band. In the end she doesn’t need a drummer, however, during another visit to Nicaragua the solo artist speaks with the band and decides to sign the band with Jardin Records. At the same time, Sarah decides to follow her own projects and moves to Mexico where she joins the Mexican band Super Luz. She is currently working on her solo artist album.

In the beginning of 2008, Josh and Checky travel to Mexico City for a small tour. Andres and Beto aren’t able to travel so the Garcia brothers invite their cousin, Luis (Wicho) Garcia to play the guitar. The positive outcomes of the concert cause Wicho to join the band.

On March 21 of 2008, the band travels to Phoenix, Arizona to record their first album Si Tu Dices with produce Ramiro Garza. The recording would include new and previous songs written by Annette Moreno.

Right before the album is mixed, Jardin Records is hit by the economic recession in the US. Because of lack of funding the project is canceled, as well as the bands contract with the label. During this period of the band, Josh focuses on singing and Andres picks up the bass.

In July of 2008, the band records the single Ahí Estarás at a local studio. At the end of that year they go on tour the Mexican band Super Luz. They perform at various venues in Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

As 2009 begins, Checky is invited to play the bass with Annette Moreno. GenX has Bryam Cardóza cover the drums for him during a national tour with Danny Berríos. They visit Masaya, Nicaragua and Matagalpa, Nicaragua with excellent results. The band’s music reaches many local radio stations.

Without a doubt, that year becomes the hardest for the band. On May first the band is practicing for a show with Annette Moreno when they get a call with tragic news. Matthew Garcia, Josh and Checky’s younger brother, is involved in a car wreck. As they go to the hospital the news gets worse as they realize that Matthew has died. The next day, against all odds, GenX performs at the concert with Annette Moreno dedicating the concert in memory of his life.

After a brief pause, Checky continues traveling with Annette Moreno. Josh and Wicho go on tour in Mexico taking Bryam with them. Andres and Beto stay in Nicaragua due to complications with the Mexican Visa. The band modifies the name adding an e after the n. It sounds the same but the name now spell out Genex. In Mexico the band releases a demo CD named A CorazĂłn that includes one of the songs recorded in Phoenix, Conocerte. Checky is able to join the band in a few shows during the tour.

On December 27, 2009, during a concert in memory of Matthew Garcia, Genex takes the big decision of completely changing the name they’ve had for eleven years. After the concert, the band announces that Genex will no longer exist. After the shock of the crowd, they add, “We are now Dear Matthew.” The decision causes some confusion at first, but soon the followers of the band get used to the change.

In February of 2010, Dear Matthew releases the single Mienteme (AcĂşstico). At local radio stations in Nicaragua the song rises to the top ten charts.

The next couple of months, the band has no shows and starts recording. In august Checky finishes recording drums and goes on tour once more with another band.

Soon after recording the album, Dear Matthew travels to Mexico for the Miénteme tour. For the first time, Andres is able to travel with the band. He also plays the drums during the length of the tour.

Dear Matthew is currently planning a new tour in Mexico and the USA, as well as a nation wide tour in Nicaragua including an album release concert in Managua, Nicaragua. The new album, Miénteme is produced by Andres and Wicho, and recorded in Managua, Nicaragua. The 15 tracks of the recording include Ahí Estarás, Siempre Gritaré, A Corazón, and Miénteme. The album features the voice of Sarah in the bonus track Please, Don’t Walk Away. Miénteme is scheduled to be released on December 10, 2010 online and soon after in local music stores in Mexico and Nicaragua.
