Debra Jaye - Bio
Debra Jaye has been writing songs since she can remember - banging on the keys of her grandma’s piano and hiding in the garden so that no one could hear her sing. Songwriting has always been a private thing for this acoustic-folk songstress and the private quality of her songs is exactly what draws you in. Weaving stories that are honest, vulnerable and forthright with the laidback sounds of contemporary acoustic folk, Debra Jaye invites you into her heart and into her world.
It’s probably a good thing that at the age of eighteen, Debra’s father gave her his old guitar. With this simple tool and years of passionate writing she has crafted the collection of songs that make up her debut album ‘These Wings Inside’. Debra describes the recording process this way “What started as a demo CD somehow just kept expanding. Like a creature that wants to be born, the album seemed to draw what it needed from its surroundings. More and more people kept jumping on board and offering their support. All of a sudden I had this album, full of so much more life than I ever anticipated.”
While her musical influences range from Joni Mitchell to Ani DiFranco, Sarah McLaughlin to Elliot Smith, the biggest musical influence in Debra’s life was her mother. Debra played the Fremantle music scene sporadically over the last few years and fronted the band Icaro, in which she sang devotional and world music flavoured tunes, it took the death of her mother to set her on the dedicated path of pursuing her original music career. Her mother, Peta, was a classically trained piano teacher and nurtured Debra’s love of music from the beginning. “When mum died, suddenly the question ‘what do I really want to do with my life?’ became much more significant and I guess this is it”. ‘These Wings Inside’ is dedicated to Peta.
