I set out to record my first full length album ten years ago, but my recording obsession started when I was only 7 years old. I would make up countless songs and tell ghost stories through the plastic multi-colored microphone. I graduated to a dual cassette tape deck boom box in middle school; All the while torturing my parents with my bedroom performances. I recorded back and forth between the two decks effectively making it my first multi-track studio. When I finally got my Yamaha 4-Track sometime in the early 90’s I used it so often that I snapped the record button right off of the machine. I have always been a little heavy handed.
Today at the age of 33 I favor antiquated electronics, big fat zip disks for storage, casiotones with faux wood paneling, low quality samplers, and estate sale studio components to record through. The experimentation and the careful assembly of all these strange parts into a recorded performance is the most fun for me. In fact, I question if I am a musician at all. I play quite a few instruments on “Strange Commodity”, but to me it is the knob tweeking, and fader sequencing that makes the difference between a sonic mess and a masterpiece. I still have so much to learn.
After nine and a half years on my journey to record my first full length CD, I decided to start over from scratch, spare one song I didn’t have the heart to throw away. I am curious if you will be able to pick it out? The other twenty odd songs I wrote over the last nine and a half years are still in my closet in a metal box. I consider these stale works my learning curve that provided me with years of entertainment. Some people play video games, some people watch sports, this is what I do with my time. The new songs I have compiled on “Strange Commodity” represent a lift from the digital curse of re-recording tracks for over a decade. I finally decided to finish something fresh and share it with you. I hope you enjoy.
