There is a type of plant called Rhipsalis baccifera, (more colloquially known as “Mistletoe Cactus”) which is infamous for being the only cactus to naturally occur outside of the New World. This audacity, of course, is shared by two inelegant holy-days known as Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, just substitute New World with charlatanism.
Clutching my pelvis, I tell my child every night with decreasing reluctance that “Banality reigns dear.” Sometimes I shout it, but only when I’ve gone too long without observing my child weep over the pulverization of the many birds I kill. He once wept with a particular vigor when I systematically destroyed a “partridge in a pear tree” ornament he had crafted in school. I guess for him it was the worst day of Christmas!
I insist that I’m doing this for the good of my child. I don’t actually love him or anything, but I see him as a very important project. The intention of this plan, which will last five years, is to project my own values onto him so that he has no fair opportunity to develop a view. Selflessness and the preservation of tradition are what constitute the present day itself, Christmas. Well it will be Christmas in T minus 34 seconds...
