From the album liner notes:

“Queen of Diamonds must be the most eagerly awaited debut instrumental album since The Shadows’ self-titled LP of 1961...

The Falcons came to the attention of instro guitar fans with their “Shadow Land” cassette of 1993. The three tracks on this release had pundits comparing Mike Beddoes’ finger-style approach with that of Mark Knopfler, lead guitarist with Dire Straits. The following year The Falcons released their six track CD “Fly by Night”, including five new titles alongside the merited reappearance of Shadow Land. Mike’s cleanly picked treble twang complemented by real rhythm guitar from Kim Clarke made an immediate impression and the band’s European tour of 1995 was keenly anticipated.

The tour focused around their appearance at Pipeline magazine’s annual Rock Instrumental Convention in London where the band won themselves many new fans with their distinctively flowing melodic style. It was a memorable performance and a new tune, Queen of Diamonds, was one of numerous highlights. On a bill which included The Fentones, The Moontrekkers and Nero & The Gladiators, three original UK instrumental acts from the 60s, The Falcons showed that the spirit of guitar instrumentals will be safe in their hands for the next thirty years.

The Falcons’ complete set from the 1995 Pipeline Convention was released on their “Live in London” cassette, and six of the eleven tracks were featured on their video “The Falcons in Shadow Land”. This opened with the band’s promotional video of Shadow Land itself, and closed with their performance of Apache when they were joined on-stage, at his 60th birthday celebrations, by legendary Ventures guitarist Nokie Edwards.

...So here we are, nearly five years after their debut, with The Falcons first album “Queen of Diamonds”. The benefits of not rushing, but ensuring that a whole album’s worth of high quality material was in place before launching the project, are plain for all to hear. The Falcons’ expressive playing, haunting melodies, and inventive arrangements will bring unique pleasure for years to come.

It is particularly fitting that “Queen of Diamonds” features two bonus tracks with Nokie Edwards, whose deft fingering has been an inspiration to so many guitarists over the past three decades. And with their original and distinctive style, the Falcons have proved themselves ready to join Nokie in the top flight of rock instrumentalists.”

Reviews:

“From the bottom of my heart, I am glad that The Falcons have produced such a beautiful album.” - Yuzo Sasaki, Guitar Graphic, Japan

“The Falcons fondly display the classic, clear-ringing guitar tones of past greats like The Ventures and Duane Eddy while also embracing a more ethereal and breathy tone, reminiscent of Mark Knopfler’s guitar stylings. They seem to like hanging out in the old west rather than at the beach, too, with tracks like “Eldorado” and “El Nino”. However, what really sets them apart from the pack is the way they flesh tunes out. They give them time to breath instead of making them all high-octane bursts of reverb.” - Chart Magazine, Canada

“Les Top du Mois... Indispensable.” - Jean Bachelerie, Guitar & Drums, France
