Details:
Felix Ocean conceived his first album, “The Hanging Gardens of My Mind,” as a three-month project in his senior year of college, sick of his engineering curriculum and yearning to make music. Then at Stanford Universty, Felix signed up for an independent study in September 2010, and composed and recorded the entire album in a whirlwind four months, at the expense of his academics, missing the three-month goal only because of a bout of carpal tunnel.
Felix self-instrumented the whole album -- guitars, saxophone, flutes, dulcimer, harp, drumset, hand percussion, beats, and synths -- except for violin on “Through the Green Beyond,” played by Christy Mooers, and vocal effects on “Naples Jump,” by Harper Hug. Felix also mixed and mastered the whole album himself on a laptop, figuring he would learn more by going through the whole process, start to finish, than by tossing it over to a mastering studio.
Felix planned the album as a beat-driven sonic exploration into what moves him most about music: is it melody? rhythm? acoustic instruments? odd time signatures? unique and multilayered textures of odd instruments and sounds? In the end, he produced a debut album that mixes all of these, discovering that the unhelpful answer to this question was “yes,” to all of these and more. But he was satisfied by the answer. It means that from here, Felix Ocean looks forward to a long career in music, from electronic music production to film scoring, deejaying to solo acoustic guitar performance, and everything in between.
