For a band of brothers that has been performing together nearly all their lives, All of the Above’s debut studio album could be considered long overdue: Thankfully, good things come to those who wait. From start to finish, “All of the Above” delivers the bright, breezy alternative rock that audiences have come to expect. The 11-song, 43-minute effort begins with the sprightly, energetic ‘Feather’. While a catchy song in it’s own right, it is likely the reggae-influenced anthem ‘All I Want is You’ that bears the album’s most infectious chorus. Completing the first trio of songs is ‘Roll With It’, a mix of melancholy and carefree that could have come from the repertoire of Jack Johnson himself.

Folky acoustics and funky grooves reign throughout the album, and several sonic flavours of the band are showcased along the way. For instance, ‘Open Arms’ leverages flamenco guitar and conga beats for a latin/rock changeup, while ‘Fly’ employs banjos, harmonica, and slide guitars for a bluegrass, jam-band feel. The gritty, brooding ‘Eyes on Me’ showcases a darker, edgier side of the band, while the guitar and mandolin layered ballad ‘Your Sailor’ was clearly influenced by East Coast Canadian and Celtic sounds. The band brings us back to “home-base” with the rocking jam ‘Take it All’, and closes the album with ‘Madly’, a mellow acoustic-pop finale.

This, their debut album, is the fruit of an ongoing recording project that started in 2008. After writing and recording for more than three years, the band first released a live/studio EP called Home in October 2010. Released to help promote the upcoming album, the disc included six live acoustic recordings, and four early releases from the project. Reviews for Home were positive, comparing the band to some of the greats in their genre:

“…it should come as no surprise that I''m a big fan of Home… After all, as songs like "Set Me Free" and "Feather" demonstrate, it hits all the same points as DMB (Dave Matthews Band) to say nothing of the likes of Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, et al. It''s poppy, it''s breezy, there''s plenty of jamming."

And the good news kept coming, both at home and abroad. Soon after Home was released, the single ‘Feather’ reached the shortlist in the international category of the prestigious Australian Songwriters Association Songwriting Competition. Weeks later, Jared and Evan received a $10,000 recording grant from Canada’s Rawlco Radio to fund their studio album project. Now, only six months later, the band has released the full studio album, and the Saskatchewan Recording Industry Association saw fit to include ‘Feather’ on their 2011 promotional compilation CD.

“It was a lot of good news in a short amount of time,” said Jared Cechanowicz, one of All of the Above’s frontmen. “You just try to take it as a compliment and remember that there’s still a lot of hard work to do.”

The band began working on their long-awaited album after their first MP3 single ‘This Car’ won 2008 Single of the Year on the Saskatchewan Home Grown Top 30 podcast; a surprising feat considering their competition was two of Saskatchewan’s heavyweight performers, Theresa Sokyrka and Shaun Verreault (Wide Mouth Mason).

“We started recording before we had any money to do it,” laughed Evan Cechanowicz, brother to Jared and co-founder of the band. “But it took going into the red for a couple years to create something that really started to get people excited.”

When asked about the completed album, Evan responded, “It’s great, it sounds great…I’m not saying it’s a great album, that’s for other people to decide. But we’re really excited and proud of it. I’m glad we took our time.”

Thankfully, for the band and their fans, good things come to those who wait.
