''''Ali Murray is my brother and this may not be a typical music bio. I remember when Ali first told me he was going to write, record and self-release an album under his own name. It was one day in the middle of winter in 2006, a particularly dark and cold winter, even for the Isle of Lewis. My immediate response was “You’re not ready.” He had shown me a couple of rough songs and possibly even a couple of demos and although they were okay, I felt that he had not found his musical and especially his lyrical voice yet.
During the last couple of years I have been lucky enough to get a first listen to Ali’s songs as they were being recorded. On more than one occasion I have felt regret at being so harsh and critical towards his music during the early stages. However this regret rapidly disappears when I hear how far he has come musically, lyrically and as a person since that winter day.
It is all documented in his debut album ‘An Endless Lullaby’. ‘An Endless Lullaby’ is not a pop album. It is not an album borne from good times. It is an album written and recorded during the most difficult years of both his and my life. Our mother, who we loved dearly, was diagnosed with cancer in April 2008 and died a year later in April 2009. There is too much to say about that period. Suffice to say an awful lot happened. But, it is wrong to say ‘An Endless Lullaby’ is an album about death. It is about life and death. Highs and lows. Love and hate. The complexities of sickness and health, joy and sorrow and the fact that these polar opposites exist whether we choose to acknowledge them or not. I see it as Ali’s very own expression about a time in his life that he probably will not and cannot talk about. What do you see it as?''''
