I grew up in boisterous, energetic Pentecostal churches. Old-fashioned gospel hymns that were lively and repetitive were the norm. I remember singing songs that had animated hand and body motions around age six in front of the church. I sang for many services and had no fear of being up front, belting out the songs and acting them out if called for.
30 years later, I enjoy ministering with music the same way. Though the hand motions have diminished some, the liveliness I grew up in has not. I love a fast song where people clap and rejoice, but also cherish the old moving hymns that can evoke a deep emotional response. God has blessed my life with a talent to sing and play the piano. I began playing the piano at 10 years old, and writing my own songs at 15. He has placed an anointing in the songs he gives me that brings incredible power to a service. I am sometimes amazed at the Lord’s power that moves through a crowd while I physically feel his presence on stage. The power of God is so alive and real.
I have sung gospel music with my family for most of my life; I have also ministered with the Footsoldiers Ministries band for over 13 years. I am comfortable with solos and group performances. I can accompany myself on piano or sing with others’ accompaniment. I have ministered in small, medium, and large churches — and under bridges in the dirt to homeless and less fortunate. Where I sing and play depends only upon the Lord’s guiding. Wherever he leads, I want to follow.
Destiny, the album we recently released, has some songs that are varied in instrumentation. Many, however, are just me, the piano and Jesus. While I cannot promise an absolute occurrence of the Lord’s power every time I sing, I pray for him to move in and through me to minister to others. I know God answers prayers when faith is present – and I believe HIM!
