Leeam’s musical career started in the early 60’s when his folk trio, the “Carolee Singers” won an intramural competition to represent Rutgers University in the First Intercollegiate Folk Song Festival. Sponsored by the Goya Guitar Company, the festival took place at the Grossingers Resort in the Catskill Mountains in New York.
Months later later they were invited to take the place of the famous “Weavers” Folk Singers, who had canceled out of a Rutgers Concert in Newark. A representative of Savoy Records who happened to be present at the performance, invited the group to an audition and subsequently offered them a recording contract. This never came to fruition, as shortly thereafter Leeam was drafted into the US Army.
Stationed at Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas, he started up a new folk trio. However after 6 months he was shipped out to an Evacuation Hospital in Germany. In his final year in the service Leeam auditioned and was accepted into the 7th Army Soldiers Chorus and was instrumental in starting the first chorus folk trios, performing in various chorus shows and in German Universities.
The Chorus toured Europe singing in concert halls and on European television in Paris, Berlin, Italy, and England. In 1965,competing in Holland against more than 70 other choruses, they were awarded first place in Europe. The most recent performance the chorus alumni was at a reunion in Philadelphia in July, 2010 where they sang the National Anthem at a Philadelphia-Cincinnati baseball game.
In the years since, aside from working in his profession as a hospital pharmacist, Leeam has managed to keep on performing as well as writing music.
