“WOULD THAT I COULD”
New Release of the Music~Fusion~Poetry CD by ‘Word Dancer’, Irina Kuzminsky
Breathing New life into Poetry with Dance
Australian “Word Dancer” Irina Kuzminsky
launches her groundbreaking poetry CD of
spiritual and musical fusion, Would That I Could
In this new way of experiencing poetry the
listener is given a unique insight into one
woman’s personal quest to achieve spiritual
insight into a world graced by the feminine soul.
The music is eclectic, both meditative and engaged, drawing on a common human past, and yet profoundly fresh and new.
Musically the CD encompasses classical and world influences, ranging from Celtic and Indian to medieval chant and contemporary, against a backdrop of sounds from nature. Searing original vocals and spoken word blend in a unique style to create original settings of Irina’s poems. “It was each poem that gave me the clue as to the musical setting it wanted to have,” says Irina.
The words draw their inspiration from various spiritual traditions of the world, from Sufism and the Whirling Dervishes, to Christianity, Sophia, and the Devi in Her many forms.
Listeners have found the CD “exotic”, “different”, “mesmerizing”, “unique” ¬– “the balance of all the elements” is “an alchemy that somehow you have managed to concoct”
“Your voice and music have a healing quality” SBS Radio interview 22 Dec 2010
“Irina is absolutely a voice for our time, a voice in which the feminine is exquisitely and burningly present in rage, depth, eroticism and tenderness”
Jay Ramsay (poet, author, healer)
“To you poetry is a vehicle of the truth and that is something I value greatly”
William Anderson (author, poet, broadcaster)
It Started in Childhood
“As a child the first poems I remember were sung – voice, melody, words and rhythm all working together. There was not much separation between the rhythm of the words and the rhythms of the musical voice,” says Irina. “So, extending poetry into the realm of music was simply to follow what was already there. Each artform illuminating the other – and showing another way into the same space.
It is the space which is the key to it, the space I seek to contact – or which contacts me – when I write. And it’s the same space I look for when I dance or when I hear or make music. This space transmits – an – experience, a feeling, an intangible knowing – it might come initially in the form of a rhythm or an image or a phrase – or even a gesture. My work is to remain clear enough to sense it as purely as I can, and then to give it form.
Like movement and sounds, words are themselves vibrations, part of the whole spectrum of vibrating energy which deep down is our reality. Poetry – poetry is like the dance of language – words dancing – and pointing beyond themselves, offering a portal onto the mystery which lies beyond. It is there that that space is found where we touch the universe and are touched by it in turn, nourishing our senses and our souls – and poetry helps open a road there, a road then travelled by the musical voice.”
Would That I Could grew out of the publication of Irina’s first poetry collection, Dancing with Dark Goddesses, published in the UK by Awen in 2009, and launched at the Heaven’s Gate festival celebrating William Blake’s birthday.
As part of the launch Irina performed a set from Dancing with Dark Goddesses, combining dance, poetry and music, which was acclaimed as “breathtaking”, “an incredible dance-recital tour de force” and “a performance of complete commitment, passion and technical brilliance”.
Audience comments included: “special and different – like no-one else”, “unique”, “otherworldly”, “it feels very ancient what you do”, “like nothing I have ever seen before – fantastic!”
Dancer, Poet, Singer, Pianist, Academic
Irina is a dancer, poet and singer with wide-ranging performance experience in dance, recitals, opera, cross-arts collaborations and dance theatre. Living the dance through performance, poetry and music remains for her a lifelong discipline and exploration of the fusion of the physical and spiritual aspects of the self. At the most personal level her art - and life - are centred around the desire to rediscover and reconnect with the Divine Feminine. Poetry, dance and music are both a part of and an expression of that journey.
Upon graduating from Melbourne University (Arts and Music), Irina won a Commonwealth scholarship to Oxford where she wrote her doctorate on the Language of Women, and was elected Junior Research Fellow in Humanities at Wolfson College.
