As with his children’s / family album, Hello, My Friend, Chaz Strickland once again reveals a wonder of the world and love of humanity. His Christmas folk-tale, The Coat, captures you and pulls you along willingly through the snowy, bitter-cold, winter streets of the city, following an act of generosity and love.
Chaz teaches private music lessons (guitar, electric bass, drum set, piano/keyboards, recorders, beginning banjo and mandolin - and a smattering of beginning harmonica) to students ages 2 - 80. His song writing and playing reflect the influence of 60''s & 70s folk artists Peter, Paul & Mary, The Kingston Trio, Brothers Four, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Arlo Guthrie, Simon & Garfunkel, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor, John Denver, and like that, Bub / Bubbette.
His wife, Suzanne, runs a home-based day care center which has provided a ready and ready-made audience for his children’s/family songs. Their favorite song of Chaz’s, from his Hello, My Friend album, is It’s Halloween!, a song the children request all year long (even on Christmas eve - they like the screams, howls and moans in the Halloween song.)
Chaz began learning guitar in the mid 60s from his brother, Bob, who’d been taught by a University of Maryland roommate. The roommate had been a victim of polio and was never expected to have the use of one of his arms. Despite that prediction, he learned to play a twelve-string guitar, strumming with his “useless” arm and chording with his able one. Chaz is indebted to his brother and to that roommate.
