Details:
Backlash was formed in 2002 as a vehicle to explore one of the great eras of jazz- the 1960s Blue-Note hard-bop style in which some of the greats including Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock all recorded ground breaking albums with quintets.
The repertoire of Backlash has always been selected to reflect the energy and drive of this style and in the early years Backlash held residencies in the Perth CBD, performed at festivals and toured throughout WA. While the repertoire expanded to include additional styles such as funk and latin material, the core of Hard-Bop has remained central to the band’s identity.
Long overdue, this album represents Backlash’s transformation from a collection of session musicians jamming over well known (and less well known) hard-bop tunes, into a predominantly original outfit. The compositions written by the band members strive to maintain and explore further levels of this style by keeping the tunes raw, energetic, swingin’, groovin’ and occasionally cruisin’.
This project has only been possible through the support of all the musicians in the band. Every musician contributed original material to the album, attended workshops and rehearsals at often inconvenient times, and helped in the mixing/post-production stages.
