Whiskey Puppy: A brief history.

The year was 2000. Rachel Gold and Justin Auld were spending a pleasant afternoon picking music in a grassy field, when suddenly a vision (or was it a hallucination?) appeared in the heavens. It was an angel telling them to go to the store to get more beer. Later that afternoon in a frenzy of fervor, they decided to form a band ... and that band was called Whiskey Puppy. After much deliberation and name-calling they decided to add a bass to the mix, so they organized a wacky jail break and freed Travis Harrison from maximum security. He reluctantly joined the band in "gratitude." With much research, hard work and practice, Whiskey Puppy began a whirlwind tour of small bars, medium-sized bars, large bars, parties, weddings and small bars in Portland, Oregon. Then in 2001, using state-of-the-art home recording equipment (and lots of beer), Whiskey Puppy recorded their first breakthrough album, "Pork Dungeon (Hair of the Puppy)," a collection of long-forgotten classics and hits from the late 1920''s, as well as some original classics and interpretations of bluegrass standards. History was made again in early 2003 with the release of the second Whiskey Puppy album: "Love Storm (puppy style)," a second collection of music that explores the depths of obscure Americana, and delves deep within the cracks of forgotten songs.

Bluegrass Unlimited had this to say about Whiskey Puppy: "Make no mistake about it, the music of Whiskey Puppy has a raucous edge that straddles the line between old-time and bluegrass music. The prime objective of this Oregon-based quartet is to preserve roots music, and the material in "Love Storm" illustrates that dedication." (BU Oct. 2003)

Whiskey Puppy strives to preserve and continue bluegrass and old time music, specializing in finding the old songs that no one else covers. With almost five years as a band, Whiskey Puppy''s material spans from jug band music of the early 1900''s to bluegrass both old and new. 2004 was Whiskey Puppy''s busiest year yet with appearances at Tillamook''s MooGrass Festival and in Ridgefield Washington for the Birds and Bluegrass Festival. They also won the "Not quite bluegrass" band contest at the Columbia Gorge Bluegrass Festival in Stevenson, Washington! Quite a busy year for such a small dog. 2005 promises to be busier still, with recording their soon-to-be released third album "The Fate of Man (Before the Dawn of Pants)" and their first ever cross-country tour in July!

Whiskey Puppy is Rachel Gold (guitar), Justin Auld (banjo) and Travis Harrison (bass). You have to hear it to believe it!
