If you find yourself participating in a whistling contest, shaking small percussive instruments or imitating a car horn with your voice, you might be in kindergarten... or you might be engaged in crowd participation at one of Shera Kelly''s shows! “I like involving the audience when I perform. I like to feel that I have connected with the people that I am sharing my songs with by interacting with them, rather than just singing at them. When an audience comes to see me they don’t know what to expect and I want to have a fun time with them.” But do not be fooled; Shera is as serious as she is silly. Shortly following a crowd clap along, you’ll hear heartfelt songs with pure melodies and dynamic style. What separates Shera from other songwriters is her ability to powerfully communicate life’s joy and heartbreak with both humor and grace.
Although her talent and passion for singing emerged naturally at a young age, Shera honed her skills by attending Music school at Selkirk College in Nelson B.C. There, she earned her music diploma in 2007. Following this, she performed regularly in Nelson and captivated audiences across the Kootenays with her unabashed love for lyrics and music.
Since 2007, Shera has performed in and organized many benefit concerts, played music on live television for Hockey Day In Canada (hosted by Don Cherry and Ron MacLean), opened shows for Sam Bradley and Jeremy Fisher, written a jingle for national radio and received airplay on CBC radio 2 for her song “Seafoam Green”. Additionally, she received a Columbia Basin Touring grant and hosted the songwriters radio show “Sagacious Song-writers” in 2007 at Kootenay Co-op Radio.
Over the last year, Marcus Abramzik (double bass & backing vocals) and Alicia Murray (drums & percussion) have joined Shera, turning a solo acoustic act into an energized folk/pop trio. With the addition of band mates, Shera’s versatility in song writing becomes ever more apparent, sliding from sultry jazz pop to Ukrainian tinged show tunes within a 45-minute performance.
Shera can be found playing around Canada and will be touring through your neck of the woods in 2011.
