Details:
It was through different musical journeys that Bryan McGurn and Nicole McGurn came to form the multifaceted electro-soul duo Belle Boussole. Both growing up in New Jersey from bordering towns, Bryan and Nicole didn’t meet until years later. He had played guitar in various bands since a teenager and discovered acid jazz while living in Hong Kong. She took piano and sax lessons as a kid and sang in her school chorus. But it wasn’t until meeting (and getting married), one could argue, that they found their true musical direction.

Story Behind The Cover: Last spring Belle Boussole was asked to perform at a literary event entitled “Are You Cool?” in Newburyport, MA hosted by The Tannery Series, a local literary advocacy group. One of the speakers was award winning poet and University of Vermont faculty member, Major Jackson. Jackson, who lists among his inspirations the great American avant jazz composer Sun Ra, wrote the title poem of his 2009 collection “Leaving Saturn” in the voice of the late jazz bandleader.
The event’s organizers asked Belle Boussole to perform a piece by Sun Ra in order to tie the music into the event. This posed somewhat of problem since Belle Boussole is a melodic neo-soul/lounge act, and Ra’s band, the “Arkestra” was renowned for putting on bizarre, other worldly performances. We ended up taking one of Ra’s more melodic compositions, “Love In Outer Space”, and recast it in a futuristic, lounge mold while preserving the melody, meter, spirit of the original.
More than pleased with the result, and having received positive reviews over several live performances of the piece, we have now flushed out the production and recorded the track for release in Spring 2011.
