Details:
Iraida (Ira) Erokhina is one of the world''s most highly skilled performers on the 3-string domra, a Russian folk instrument similar to the mandolin. She received her education at the Russian State Academy of Music in Moscow. After completing post-graduate studies in teaching and performing, she was appointed senior lecturer there. Her performance career commenced after her brilliant victory at the prestigious All-Russia Competition in St. Petersburg in 1979. For many years, Iraida was a soloist for the world-renowed Osipov Folk Orchestra in Moscow, recording for television and radio in Russia and abroad.
In 1995 she took part in the International Eisteddfod in Roodepoort, South Africa and was awarded two First Prizes in the Classical and Folk sections. Shortly after immigrating to Canada in 1999, Iraida joined the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra, appearing as both a featued soloist and section performer. Ira has a varied repertoire which she expands by transcribing challenging solo pieces written for other instruments, adapting them for performance with her own instrument, with pleasing results.
