Details:
i was born and raised in georgia to a large family (seven children) and have been singing ever since i was a little girl. the first song i recollect learning was the version of "froggie went a''courtin" that my great-grandmother used to sing to my grandfather to put him to sleep at night. this song was one of the many tunes that my scotch-irish family passed down from generation to generation as they settled in the hills of western north carolina and east tennessee.

i learned to sing from listening to my sister, rachel, sing me to sleep at night. rachel turned every song that touched her voice into a beautiful old-timey ballad. my other siblings, my parents and grandfather, and many hours singing in church growing up gave me a love of old-timey hymns, bluegrass duets, gospel and 1930''s pop, not to mention good old country and American folk. i picked up a guitar at the age of 10 and very recently began writing songs. it was through the encouragement of friends and family that i put together this record as a present to those i love and, because of the distance between us, can''t sing for very often.

the record features twelve songs that i wrote and the duet "two of a kind" by friend and songwriter andy bromage. i like the mix of bluegrass instrumentation, up-tempo swinging country, hints of jazz and balladry on the record. some songs have a full band sound while others are simple, with just me and my guitar.

i have been writing a lot in 2005 and look forward to putting out more records, a process i have enjoyed immensely. i recently moved from new haven, ct, and now make my home in asheville, north carolina. look for me playing out and about in the southern appalachian region.

some wonderful musicians play on the album, including grammy-award winning dobro player stacy "yank" phillips; new england singer-songwriter & banjo player mr. andy bromage; the boston-based rocker audrey ryan on fiddle and electric guitar; mandolin player & yale historian brian noell; forester & hubbie rob lamb on the upright bass and electric/acoustic guitar; and album mix/master & producer jef wilson on drums and percussion.

i hope that you enjoy the record...

peace & blessings,

mary alice
