Details:
Joshua Colburn (formerly of Eleventeen) is at it again, this time writing songs expanding on the famous passage from the Bible known as The Lord''s Prayer. While the inspiration for these songs is age-old, the lyrical approach and musical content is anything but old. Joshua has teamed up with producer, engineer, arranger and musician Scott MacGill to create a style that is uniquely theirs. Drawing on diverse influences (Ryan Adams, Tom Waits, Counting Crows, and Wilco to name a few), these songs create a sonic landscape that pulls you in and doesn''t let go. Take a listen - we think you''ll like what you hear.
FULL OF LAND & SEA BIO:
Of Land & Sea is not your typical band name, which is appropriate, because this is not your typical band. Born out of the contrasting styles and unearthly connection of its main members, OL&S has found making music easy from day one. Two musicians could not have much different backgrounds than Joshua Colburn and Scott MacGill.
Joshua was raised on the likes of James Taylor, Van Morrison and Pink Floyd. He ended up gravitating to punk and it’s derivatives, then to alt-country and alt-rock in their many forms. His more current influences are Ryan Adams, Counting Crows and Sunny Day Real Estate. Scott was raised on bands like Rush, Boston and Van Halen on one side, and funk and R&B from artists like Stevie Wonder, Sly & The Family Stone and Earth, Wind & Fire on the other. Where they’ve come together is making music that isn’t afraid to explore new musical territory, and isn’t afraid to be honest about where they’re coming from in life, whether it’s about loving God or taking life in the chops.
Scott MacGill (keyboards, vocals, percussion) has been playing, recording, writing, directing, producing and engineering (both studio and live) music for over 30 years. A product of Richmond, CA, he’s been playing in and working with Bay Area bands his whole life. While Scott has extensive experience, he’s never had a better extended musical experience than working with Joshua. “Sometimes we just have to laugh, because we’re thinking the same thing so much in the studio and on stage”, says Scott, “It’s pretty amazing having a writing partner who has such a different perspective, and yet consistently comes to the same conclusions you do.”
While Joshua Colburn has less years under his belt, his list of accomplishments is nothing short of impressive. Currently Worship Pastor at CrossWinds Church in Dublin, CA, his musical history wouldn’t lead you to believe he would end up with a job like that. Most recently lead singer and primary songwriter for Eleventeen, Joshua has shared domestic and international stages with notables Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, White Stripes, Deftones, POD and Interpol, to name a few. He’s been fortunate enough to work with several of today’s first-call producers, including Jay Robbins (Jawbreaker, Jets to Brazil), Aaron Prelwitz (Sun Kill Moon, Death Cab for Cutie), and Chris Gainsworth (Bush, Red House Painters). Joshua felt God calling him away from the success of Eleventeen at the height of their powers to work in ministry full time, and hasn’t looked back since. Recently teaching a college course on The Psalms with Shane Bernard, of Shane & Shane, he continues to add new facets to his experience. A prolific writer, his catalog of songs continues to grow at a pace far outstripping the rate at which they can be recorded.
Which makes for an ideal situation for Scott to work in. Owner of a small but well-equipped recording studio in the East Bay right in Joshua’s neighborhood, he’s ready to record new music at any hour. “Collaboration has never been easier than with Scott” Joshua says, “It’s like we have one mind split between two different musical eras.” The ease with which the “The Lord’s Prayer” record came together was a little unnerving, but has both eagerly anticipating upcoming live shows and the process of recording the next album.
Rounding out the current crew are two highly talented newcomers Erin Agenjo and Kyle Treadway. Erin’s voice has been likened to those of Leigh Nash and Björk. It seems easy for her to pull the listener into a different space with just a few notes. Scott and Joshua are scheduled to start work on Erin’s first solo album mid-2007. Kyle is OL&S’ amazing utility man, a drummer, keyboardist, guitarist and vocalist. His open-minded approach to the music is invaluable to the group, especially live, as songs take on different shapes and directions.
With the advent of their first album, the possibilities seem to be opening up pretty quickly for OL&S. With plans for several small tours, record sales on the web and in local stores, and a network of industry contacts across the country, things are ramping up pretty quickly. And with plans already in the works for a follow-up album before getting to work on Erin’s album, things won’t be slowing down any time soon.
