GreenFire talks about their music

Sometimes reality is the dream

At the Brink - The title track is a song that questions our future. It gives one a feeling of flying over the earth in a low glider taking a peek at the beauty of ocean, trees and sky. What will be? We are at the brink of so many changes and hold the responsibility of stewardship in our hands. The eyes of the world, the eyes of all living beings, are watching.

Creatures of the Night - A mood piece set near the city, this haunting song imparts a feeling of solitude. The music suggests nocturnal creatures, partially revealed by fluttering wings and mysterious sounds, beckoning with mystery and excitement. Loneliness can be transforming. Perhaps it''s time to leave the city.

Light Site - (instrumental) This piece was inspired by the memory of playing in the forest and finding a resting place where the moss felt as though it was two feet thick. You could lie down, close your eyes and let the sun filter through the trees creating a quilt of shadows and light on your body. The sound of wind in the trees, the ever-surprising beauty of being alive was intense and fragrant on this beloved "mossy spot."

The Ballad of Darwin''s Daughter (Ectopistes Migratorius) - Imagine being a young female bird looking for a mate. Purpose fills your heart. All songs and trips over treetops are for one reason only. It''s time. DNA''s undeniable directive is at the helm of your wings. Find him! But there is no one like you. There''s not even a suitable place to nest this year. The landmarks known by your migrating ancestors have disappeared. The map has changed.

North Jetty - (instrumental) Life for most continues. The power of waves breaking over rocks is a reminder of the amazing resiliency of nature. What is lost may be replaced by something different. We must adapt and appreciate the moment.

Mutha Nature - Sometimes a nightmare is funny the next day. You met Mother Nature. You stayed at her home. But she''s busy trying to survive her house falling apart. No matter what you say or do, you can''t seem to help her with what has happened. The fact that her house is falling apart is not just bad news for her, it''s alarming news for the rest of us.

Just Fine - We all have those moments when that special someone isn''t so special. And sometimes everything is OK, even when it''s not.

In the Forest - The melody and lyrics of this song are intertwined with male and female vocals, remembering a simpler time when our surroundings were taken for granted. The forest revisited here is not pale and soothing. It is simultaneously beautiful and rich with exhilarating power. Though it is said "you can never go home again," the forces that shaped our inner strength as children will be with us always.

Dream Spring - (instrumental) Some visual images never leave your heart. A pristine place inspired the music gracing the memory of a bubbling spring deep in the woods on a path that veered away from the water main punching its way to the nearby community. Its humble flow nurtured native fish as it unknowingly coexisted near the forecast of its nonexistent future.

Welcome Home - It takes courage to come home. You have changed. Everyone is older and everything looks different. You bring with you a heart worn from the path and heavy with stories you most likely won''t share. The important thing you know is what you''ve always known. Love is all that matters. And home is where the love is.

Sacrifice - This love song expresses the desire to give more than what is owned. What can you give if your pockets are empty? Make a painting ... plant a garden ... write a song.

In the Fire - An unexpected dream excursion into deep space inspired this musical journey. Love overcomes fear and a view of our galaxy at light speed calms the nerves. The terrifying beauty of the universe commands your attention and fills your soul. A meditation, a prayer, a momentary visit to the unknown leads you to a new beginning.

Phoenix - (instrumental) Arising from the ashes of the past, spiraling into the future - eternity is now.

GreenFire''s CD, At the Brink, is a dream story told by Don André and Jené Henriksson. This alternative musical journey is explored in 9 poetic songs and 4 instrumentals rich with unexpected orchestration ranging from a movie score feel that dovetails into humorous rock & roll, to simple acoustic, and smooth jazz. The title track raises a
question, and the CD becomes an unfolding flower finally sending the listener safely into the universe.

GreenFire''s reverence for the once wild Oregon coast is felt throughout the work. This CD was recorded "off the grid" in the coastal temperate rain forest using hydro and solar power. GreenFire uses the two voices of Don and Jené sometimes separately, in tandem, or simply as voices in the forest of instruments. Don''s composing contains a classical sweep as well as the influence of artists such as Alan Parsons, Pink Floyd and Mark Knofler. His lead guitar is like a ghost trumpet, simultaneously expressing grief and hope.

At the Brink is a subtle concept album reflecting Don''s memories of growing up in the forest tucked behind the coastal town of Agate Beach, Oregon. His career led him to Southern California, and he returned to find the massive forest liquidated. This forest''s spirit lives on in GreenFire''s music and is the inspiration for the band name.

A native Oregonian as well, Jené''s singing style has been shaped by performances in Paris, the Pyramids at Giza, and clubs in NYC. But coming home to Oregon is what has made the real impact on her heart. Jené''s dance and classical guitar background is part of her lyrical presentation.

GreenFire is also defined by jazz pianist and keyboard artist, Steve Burkle, and versatile guitarist, Rick Roll. Steve received an award for outstanding musicianship at the Olympic College Northwest Jazz Festival, is a master of improvisation and also engineered At the Brink. Rick amazes GreenFire with his ability to play anything and everything, having worked as the warm-up act with the Doobie Brothers, Mother Earth, Moby Grape and the Chambers Brothers.

Especially when heard from beginning to end, this CD, GreenFire''s first release, evokes visual images, breaks your heart and, in the end, offers healing. The songs of At the Brink, like stepping stones, mark the journey from what once was - to what we all still cherish.
