Details:
Jim Swick (born “James Earl Swick”) was born and raised in Paxton, Illinois, and now lives in Mayfield, Kentucky.
Jim was raised on a farm, and he learned to play harmonica while driving his dad’s tractors. “That’s probably part of the reason I play the darn thing upside down,” he says. “I didn’t know how to hold it... I was trying to farm and play at the same time, and I’m just like every other male of our species... I hardly ever read instructions.”
Jim got his first guitar while he was a freshman at Southern Illinois University. Three months and three chords later, he was putting up ads at the student center and trying to form a band. “Youth and ignorance,” Jim says. “A blissful combination!”
Jim played in a few bands from 1981 to 1987, then quit playing altogether for many years. A few years ago, he pulled his last remaining guitar out of the closet and started playing and writing again. Now, a short time later, he has just completed recording his first album, “A Fine Piece of Work.”
Jim has a unique sound, which is a combination of country, folk, and blues. He has won numerous local and statewide talent contests, and you can sometimes catch him at C.C. Cohen’s Songwriter’s night in Paducah, KY.
